In order to pinpoint the strategically relevant projects among the increasing number of project requests sent to the company’s IT department, the leading adhesive labelling specialist HERMA has been using a web-based scoring service since October 2017. This ensures that the demand management solution from the resource planning specialist Can Do communicates with HERMA’s SAP enterprise solution.
HERMA sees the replacement of its previous – mainly manual – system to prioritize projects by a web service as a big step forward. It enables direct communications between the Can Do and SAP applications, enabling staff to calculate and map the business potential of each project request. The Can Do app sends various risk-related parameters to SAP, such as value in euros, probability of a resource conflict, strategic importance of the project, amortization and more. Five different scoring values are then calculated in SAP and sent back to Can Do. Once project requests have been prioritized based on their strategic importance, they are planned within Can Do.
“It’s very helpful for us to be able to see right from the outset when limitations are likely – especially when we’re planning and implementing several projects in parallel,” explains Josef Marchner, CIO at Herma. “Can Do lets us see immediately when we’ll be able to release the required resources for implementation in a controlled way.” This increase in visibility allows the company to implement new service requirements on time and in accordance with its quality standards. It also enables the IT department to harmonize new project requests with its routine activities. Can Do shows a complete overview of available capacity –with a click of the mouse – which has changed people’s expectations at HERMA. It has significantly improved the level of understanding between IT and the business departments concerning the timing and feasibility of projects. The Can Do Demand Managements web service has recently been made available to other HERMA departments.
